Story of Eddie Guerrero and Kurt LaValerie
My twelve year old son Kurt, a big WWE Wrestling fan. From the day the he learned to walk his
favorite wrestler was the late Eddie Guerrero.
Now living in New York City one of the benefits is you can meet any celebrity, and WWE Super
Stars are no exception to this rule.
My wife and I, at the time, took our son to meet some to the greatest WWE Super Stars. From
Hulk Hogan to Triple H to Rick Flair to John Cena. Kurt has met them all and has an autographed
collection of photos. From 2000 Super Stars he has met. None of them are more important to
him than the one of Eddie Guerrero.
Here is the reason why this photo is so important, it was also important to my wife and to me.
We found out the day of Eddie being here signing autographs and meeting fans. At finding this
out my son Kurt, who at the time was 6 years old, wanted to go to. So my wife and I decided to
take him to Midtown to meet his Idol, Eddie Guerrero. At the time that this took place, Eddie
was either suspended or out on injury so there were no WWE officials. And there was nothing
there sporting the WWE logo. However even without the logo the line went around the block.
We waited in line, on a very cold November day. And after a very long wait we finally got inside
the building.
Upon entering the building my son finally got a glimpse of Eddie sitting at a table signing
autographs. And you would have sworn he was looking into the eyes of God. As the line
continued to slowly move. My son got closer to meeting a man that he veered a legend, and his
hero.
Finally we were the next ones. My son could not wait any longer to shake the hand of Eddie.
Just when Eddie signed what was to be the last autograph of the day, a guard put his hand in
front of my son, saying Eddie has to leave to get a plane. I do not have to tell you after waiting
for 3 hours, my anger got the best of me. After realizing that would not help, I meanly asked the
guard let him meet his hero.
Kurt ran as fast as he could away from my wife and me and through security. Just as my son
was stopped, Eddie noticed him. Eddie told Security to let the boy through. It was at the
approach of my son that Eddie gave him a very warming smile and asked his name. My son told
him his name followed with, “You are my Favorite.” Eddie took out a photo signed it and handed
it to my son. Embraced my son and whispered something in his ear. Of course as a father I
became a little concerned. Then my son put his little arms around Eddie’s neck and whispered
something back in his ear. When Kurt withdrew, Eddie grabbed my son by the sides of the face
and kissed him in the center of the forehead. That was the last autograph of the day.
My wife and I and our son walked back outside to brave the November cold. Kurt showed me the
autographed photo, which read “To Kurt Best Wishes Latino Heat”. (Different than above
picture).
I then asked my son what Eddie whispered in his ear. He said, “He Loved Me". Then my wife
asked what Kurt said back, and with a very nonchalant response he told us, “I Loved Him To.”
This was the day my son met his hero and to this day Eddie is still his hero.
On November 13, 2005 Eddie Guerrero Died at the Marriott City Center in Minneapolis,
Minnesota. Kurt cried for three days. The autographed photo became a security blanket. It
broke my heart to see my son suffer his first loss, but I comforted him by telling him that he
found comfort in getting a chance to tell his hero how he felt about him.
So to you Eddie Guerrero- the LaValerie family would like to thank you for making Kurt feel
special that day. WWE fans all understand that you were, and still are, the greatest entertainer
of all times.
